Análisis del funcionamiento del sistema hídrico subterráneo en el área del antiguo relleno sanitario de Navarro (Santiago de Cali, Colombia)

Abstract

Una de las principales problemáticas que plantean los sitios en los cuales se vierten residuos sólidos es la afectación que pueden producir sobre la calidad del agua subterránea del área adyacente a los mismos. La situación se maximiza si estos vertederos no han sido acondicionados para tal fin. Esta problemática se encuentra presente en la Ciudad de Cali, sur-occidente de Colombia, donde -desde fines de la década de 1960- los residuos sólidos urbanos se disponen en un volcadero a cielo abierto, conocido comúnmente como “Basuro de Navarro”. A pesar de la trascendencia del tema, hasta el momento no se había encarado un estudio integral. Es por ello, que en esta Tesis de Maestría se presenta una evaluación del estado y del funcionamiento del sistema hídrico subterráneo, subyacente al área del antiguo relleno sanitario de Navarro, con el objetivo de evaluar su respuesta ante el posible impacto de los lixiviados generados a partir de dos de los cerros que lo componen. La respuesta del sistema acuífero se simuló con los códigos numéricos Modflow, Modpath y MT3D. Para este último se seleccionó –de entre los componentes derivados del lixiviado- al cloruro, Como resultado de la simulación se evidencia la generación de una pluma a partir del antiguo relleno sanitario de Navarro con dirección hacia el cauce del Río Cauca. Ante esta situación se comprobó la factibilidad de tres diferentes alternativas de remediación con el propósito de plantear y desarrollar estrategias de manejo y gestión del agua subterránea en la zona de estudio.

One of the main problems posed by the sites where the solid waste is dumped involves the deterioration of the groundwater quality of the area adjacent to them. The situation is maximized if these landfills have not been prepared for this purpose. This problem is present in the city of Cali, south-western Colombia, where –since the late 1960s–urban solid wastes are disposed in an open digging, popularly known as “Basuro de Navarro”. Despite the relevance of the subject, until now no comprehensive study that takes into account the different aspects. Therefore, this Thesis provides an assessment of the state and functioning of the groundwater system that underlies the area of the former Navarro landfill in order to evaluate its response to the potential impact of the leachate generated from two of the hills that comprise it. The response of the aquifer system was simulated with the codes MODFLOW, MODPATH and MT3D. For the latter, among the leachate-derived constituents, chloride was selected. It is considered nonreactive, and indicative of a readily-identifiable deterioration of the groundwater quality. As a result of the simulation, the origin of a plume from the former Navarro landfill toward the bed of the Cauca River was shown. Faced with this situation, the feasibility of three different remediation alternatives were tested out. They have the purpose of providing to the various agencies with the scientific basis needed to create and develop management strategies for the groundwater in the study area.
