Hacia la agroecología: desarrollo de herramientas para facilitar la transición productiva en sistemas agropecuarios extensivos

Abstract

La Agroecología emerge como una nueva forma (estilo) de pensar y hacer la actividad agrícola, buscando la sustentabilidad ambiental, social y económica de los sistemas de producción. A partir del manejo de procesos ecosistémicos ligados a servicios ambientales considera la necesidad de generar conocimientos y tecnologías situadas localmente. De este modo, ésta se contrapone al modelo de la agricultura moderna basada en las tecnologías de la Revolución Verde, cuyos efectos negativos sobre el ambiente, la sociedad y los márgenes de rentabilidad son conocidos. El proceso de transición agroecológica a nivel predial no sólo incluye la sustitución de insumos sintéticos (fitosanitarios, fertilizantes, etc.) por bioinsumos de menor impacto ambiental, sino también el desarrollo de prácticas culturales que promueven los procesos asociados a los servicios ecosistémicos y el rediseño del predio agropecuario en concordancia con estas transformaciones. En la región centro de la provincia de Santa Fe existen productores que han iniciado procesos de transición agroecológica, ya sea por convicción o por obligación, al encontrarse en áreas periurbanas con restricciones para el uso de fitosanitarios. En correspondencia con esto, ha crecido exponencialmente la demanda a la FCA-UNL de información sobre planteos agroecológicos y el desarrollo de tecnologías para la transición o para, al menos, reducir el uso de insumos de síntesis química. Es por estos motivos que se genera el presente proyecto, en continuidad con trabajos anteriores, con el objetivo de desarrollar herramientas para facilitar la transición agroecológica en sistemas extensivos de productores empresariales, a partir del diagnóstico del estado de ordenamiento de predios en transición y su rediseño correspondiente, aplicando un enfoque de "investigación acción participativa". Las hipótesis que guía este proyecto es que el "diseño predial" es una herramienta valiosa que puede facilitar los procesos de transición hacia la agroecología a través de un re-ordenamiento de los sistemas productivos con la participación activa de los actores intervinientes. Entre los resultados esperados se incluye la realización de un protocolo que sirva de base para el reordenamiento predial en empresas que desean iniciar un cambio hacia planteos más sustentables. Adicionalmente se considera la formación de recursos humanos en una temática relativamente nueva para las ciencias agrarias en nuestro espacio de estudio.

Agroecology emerges as a new way (style) of thinking and doing agricultural activity, which aims at the environmental, social and economic sustainability of production systems, based on the management of ecosystem processes linked to environmental services, considering the need to generate knowledge and technologies located locally. In this way, it contrasts with the model of modern agriculture based on the technologies of the Green Revolution, whose negative effects on the environment, society and profit margins are known. The process of agroecological transition not only includes the substitution of synthetic inputs (phytosanitary products, fertilizers, etc.) with bio-inputs with less environmental impact, but also the development of cultural practices that promote the processes associated with ecosystem services and the farm redesign in accordance with these transformations. In the central region of the province of Santa Fe there are farmers who have initiated agroecological transition processes, either by conviction or by obligation, when they are in peri-urban areas with restrictions for the use of phytosanitary products. Corresponding to this, the demand for FCA-UNL for information on agroecological approaches and the development of technologies for transition or to at least reduce the use of chemical synthesis inputs has grown exponentially. It is for these reasons that this project is generated, in continuity with previous work, with the aim of developing tools to facilitate the agroecological transition in extensive systems of business farmers, based on the diagnosis of the farm ordination and its redesign corresponding, applying a "participatory action research" approach. The hypothesis that guides this project is that "farm design" is a valuable tool that can facilitate the processes of transition towards agroecology through a re-ordering of productive systems with the participation of the actors involved. Among the expected results is the realization of a protocol that serves as the basis for the farm design in cases in which it is sought to initiate a shift towards more sustainable approaches. Additionally, the training of human resources in a relatively new theme for agricultural sciences in our study space is considered.
