The project "BioCompounds360 - Integrated Strategies for Human Health and Sustainable Agriculture" addresses human health and sustainable agriculture through the study of bioactive compounds. It focuses on three areas: neurodegenerative diseases, pest control, and bacterial resistance. In neurodegenerative diseases, the goal is to develop cholinesterase inhibitors (AChE and BChE), crucial in conditions such as Alzheimers Disease (AD), characterized by the overactivation of these enzymes, which affects neuronal communication and promotes the formation of β-amyloid plaques. They utilize peptides from amphibian skin and metabolites from medicinal plants, as well as synthetic peptides. They aim to develop multitarget inhibitors to modulate various pathological pathways. In pest control, they develop sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides using peptides as biopesticides, which inhibit cholinesterases in pests and have antimicrobial properties, thus reducing the use of fertilizers and environmental impact. The laboratory has isolated and synthesized peptides with reversible cholinesterase inhibitory activity, promising as biopesticides. In bacterial resistance, the research focuses on identifying and optimizing peptides with antibacterial activity against pathogenic strains, relevant to human and animal health. Antimicrobial Peptides (AMPs) are ideal due to their broad spectrum of activity and different mode of action compared to conventional antibiotics. The cytotoxicity and in vivo toxicity of these peptides will be evaluated to ensure their safety and therapeutic potential. The project is based on a solid history of research on bioactive peptides in the Department of Organic Chemistry at FBCB. Since the 1990s, they have developed and patented peptides and synthetic antigens with applications in health and biotechnology. In the late 2000s, in collaboration with other researchers, they began exploring AMPs in amphibians from the Argentine Littoral, identifying peptides with various biological activities such as enzymatic inhibition, anticancer activity, and antimicrobial activity."BioCompounds360" is an interdisciplinary effort that addresses critical problems in health, agriculture, and the environment through the exploration of natural compounds, aiming to develop treatments for Alzheimer?s, combat bacterial resistance, and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
